Jane Iredale PureBronze Matte Bronzer

Fully matte mineral bronzer in three shades — the Jane Iredale recommended successor to So-Bronze

The Jane Iredale PureBronze Matte Bronzer Refill is a rich-yet-weightless matte powder bronzer that delivers natural warmth and targeted contour from a single pan. The creamy mineral formula blends streak-free, stays light on the skin, and does not settle into fine lines — a feature that especially makes a difference on mature, dry, and sensitive skin. Enriched with shea butter, jojoba oil, pine bark extract, and pomegranate seed oil, the bronzer nourishes the skin while wearing.

Three shades cover the full spectrum: Light for light to light-medium skin, Medium for light-medium to medium skin, and Dark for medium brown to dark skin — or as a pronounced sculpting contour on lighter skin tones. The 9 g refill clicks into the refillable Jane Iredale compact, available in white or gold, so you only replace the pan over time instead of the entire packaging.

The official successor to So-Bronze

The Jane Iredale So-Bronze Bronzing Powder is no longer available. Jane Iredale officially advises former So-Bronze users to switch to the PureBronze Matte Bronzer in Light — regardless of which So-Bronze shade (1, 2, or 3) was used. In practice, however, Medium or Dark may be a better matching transition depending on your skin tone and how intensely you wore So-Bronze.

It is important to know that the PureBronze Matte Bronzer is not an exact formula replacement. While So-Bronze had warm terracotta tones with golden mica shimmer (So-Bronze 1 & 2) or a peachy shimmer (So-Bronze 3), the PureBronze Matte Bronzer is completely matte — without shimmer or pearlescent particles. Those who miss the golden glow of So-Bronze can combine the matte bronzer with a refill from the PureBronze Shimmer Bronzer line for a similar effect.

Find your ideal shade

For light to light-medium skin — subtle warmth and soft contour

Jane Iredale PureBronze Matte Bronzer Light is the lightest shade in the line: a refined light brown with a neutral undertone that works as natural warmth on fair skin. This is the officially recommended standard transition from So-Bronze by Jane Iredale herself — including for So-Bronze 2 users.

For light-medium to medium skin — warm dimension and targeted contour

Jane Iredale PureBronze Matte Bronzer Medium is a warm caramel brown with a balanced golden-yellow undertone. Particularly harmonious on warm and olive complexions, and the most versatile mid-range choice among the matte bronzers — suitable for all-over warmth and contour.

For medium to dark skin — rich warmth and pronounced sculpting

Jane Iredale PureBronze Matte Bronzer Dark is the deepest shade: a rich chocolate brown with a warm undertone that works as a main bronzer on dark skin and as a pronounced sculpting contour on lighter complexions. Without gray or ashy tones — deliberately formulated for dark skin.

The refillable compact

All three shades are refills that fit into the Jane Iredale Refillable Compact. The compact is sold separately and available in two colors:

• White Refillable Compact for a light, contemporary look
• Gold Refillable Compact for a classic, warm finish

Important to know: both former So-Bronze refills and the current PureBronze Matte Bronzer refills fit in the same Refillable Compact — if you still have a compact from your previous So-Bronze, you can continue to use it.

Find your ideal brush

The PureBronze Matte Bronzer works with five different Jane Iredale brushes, each with its own specialty:

Official recommendation from Jane Iredale

The Multiuse Blending Brush is the brush personally recommended by Jane Iredale for this bronzer. Graduated fibers and a slanted profile seamlessly blend warmth over larger areas — forehead, cheekbone, jawline — and also work excellently with other textures like cream blushes and liquid foundation.

For targeted contour and precision

The Cheek Brush has a round, half-full dome with airy fiber tips that first place color concentrated and then diffuse it softly. Especially suitable for targeted contouring under the cheekbone and along the hairline.

For even powder application

The Powder Complexion Brush has a large, airy head with a tapered tip and long, semi-loose fibers that pick up powder and softly float over the skin — for an airbrushed finish over larger areas.

For multifunctional use over textures

The Liquid Complexion Brush has a wide paddle shape with firm tapered fibers for streak-free application. Compatible with liquid, cream, and powder textures — one brush for the entire routine, including the PureBronze Matte Bronzer.

For light finishing touches

The Fan Brush is the delicate option for softening harsh contour lines or blending out intense applications without wiping away color.

How to use the PureBronze Matte Bronzer?

1. Finish your complexion first with foundation or tinted day cream for an even base
2. Click the chosen refill into the Jane Iredale Refillable Compact (white or gold)
3. For all-over warmth: use the Multiuse Blending Brush and apply to the top of the forehead, temples, cheekbones, and jawline — where the sun naturally hits first
4. For targeted contouring: load the Cheek Brush and draw a diagonal line under the cheekbone, along the hairline, and under the jawline — exactly where shadow naturally falls
5. For an even powder finish over foundation: use the Powder Complexion Brush with semi-loose fibers for a light, airbrushed application
6. To blend out harsh edges or intense contour lines: use the Fan Brush to soften transitions without wiping away the color
7. Always build up in thin layers — only add more if you really want more warmth or definition
8. For extra dimension: combine a matte bronzer with a refill from the PureBronze Shimmer Bronzer line — matte shade along the contour lines, shimmer shade higher on the cheekbone

Frequently Asked Questions

Which shade suits my skin best?

Jane Iredale advises choosing the shade mainly based on the depth of your skin tone. For light to light-medium skin, Light works most naturally. For light-medium to medium skin — including warm and olive undertones — Medium is the logical choice. On medium brown to dark skin, Dark appears richer and more harmonious than lighter shades. For targeted contouring on lighter skin, Dark can also be used deliberately, provided it is applied sparingly.

I used So-Bronze — which shade should I choose now?

Officially, Jane Iredale recommends Light as the standard transition for all former So-Bronze users, regardless of which variant you wore. This advice is also explicitly given for questions about So-Bronze 2. In practice, however, another shade may naturally suit your desired look better: Medium for those who wore the warmer, more saturated So-Bronze variants, or Dark for darker skin. Important to know: the PureBronze Matte Bronzer is not an exact formula replacement — the golden mica shimmer that characterized So-Bronze is missing here. If you want that glow back, combine it with a refill from the PureBronze Shimmer Bronzer line.

What is the difference between this matte bronzer and the PureBronze Shimmer Bronzer?

The PureBronze Matte Bronzer consists of one even matte color per pan and provides warmth and definition without shine — ideal for targeted contouring or a classic sunkissed look. The PureBronze Shimmer Bronzer, on the other hand, consists of four complementary shimmer shades per pan and works simultaneously as a bronzer, highlighter, blush, and eyeshadow thanks to the mica particles that diffuse light. Choose matte for shadow and definition; choose shimmer for glow and dimension. Many users combine both.

Do I need a Refillable Compact to use this refill?

Yes. The refill is a refill pan and requires the Jane Iredale Refillable Compact to function. If you still have a compact from your earlier So-Bronze, you can continue to use it — both refill types fit in the same compact. If you don’t have a compact yet, you order one once; after that, you only choose refills, which is more sustainable and cost-effective in the long run.

How do I change the refill in the compact?

The refill clicks easily into the compact without tools. At the bottom of the compact, there is a small opening where you can pop out the old pan; then you click the new refill into the same space. The whole process takes less than thirty seconds, and the compact itself lasts for years.

Does the PureBronze Matte Bronzer contain shimmer or glitter?

No, all three shades are completely matte — without shimmer, glitter, or pearlescent particles. This makes the bronzer ideal for targeted contouring (shadows should be matte) and for those seeking a refined, natural look without shine. For shimmer, we refer to the PureBronze Shimmer Bronzer line.

Which brush is really necessary?

Jane Iredale officially recommends the Multiuse Blending Brush for this bronzer. For most users, that is indeed the logical starter brush — the graduated fibers blend warmth seamlessly. Those who also regularly do targeted contouring expand with the Cheek Brush for precision. For multifunctional use across multiple products and textures (foundation, blush, bronzer), the Liquid Complexion Brush is the most versatile choice.

Is this bronzer suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes. The formula is specially developed for sensitive skin and contains pine bark extract (proven soothing), pomegranate seed oil (antioxidant), jojoba oil, and shea butter (softening and moisturizing). No perfumes or harsh additives have been added. For skin that reacts to traditional powder bronzers, the PureBronze Matte Bronzer is often still well tolerated.

Are all shades vegan and gluten-free?

Yes, the entire PureBronze Matte Bronzer line is vegan and gluten-free. Jane Iredale is also officially cruelty-free certified by both the Leaping Bunny Program and PETA — a certification that ensures no animal testing is done at any stage of production.

How long does one refill last?

With daily use, a 9 g refill typically lasts six to twelve months, depending on how heavily you apply the bronzer and whether you use it solely as a bronzer or also for contouring.
