Jane Iredale PureBrow Brow Powder

Soft eyebrow powder for a diffused look in six shades

Where a pencil draws and a gel coats, a powder does something fundamentally different: it sprays color over the eyebrow area in a soft, diffuse layer. For sparse eyebrows—due to plucking, hormonal changes, or natural aging—this application method often provides the most natural result, as the bare areas are diffusely filled without the visibility of individual drawn lines that pencils leave behind.

Jane Iredale’s PureBrow Brow Powder is available in six pigmented shades covering the spectrum from light blonde to black. All variants are vegan and wheat-free, which distinguishes this range from the colored Brow Gel variants. On this page, you’ll find the six shades arranged from light to dark, with advice on the best shade for each hair color.

Why choose the PureBrow Brow Powder?

This powder stands out in three ways. First, the silky-soft texture and controlled release thanks to Boron Nitride, which allows the color to distribute evenly without fallout under the eye. Second, the nourishing effect of Panthenol and Glycerin, which keep eyebrow hairs healthier and more supple with daily use—a detail especially relevant for mature and thinning eyebrows. Third, the clean beauty standard: all six shades are vegan, wheat-free, and cruelty-free. Important to know: application requires the matching Eye/Brow Brush from Jane Iredale, sold separately. A regular eyeshadow brush offers less control over the eyebrow shape.

Find your ideal shade

The six variants are grouped by hair color family. Jane Iredale’s rule of thumb: choose no more than half a shade darker than your own hair color.

Blonde shades

For blonde hair, there are two options. Ash Blonde has a cool, taupe-gray undertone and works for light blonde to strawberry blonde hair without a warm glow. Neutral Blonde is the balanced mid-tone without undertone, ideal for light to medium blonde and graying hair that falls between cool and warm.

Red and strawberry blonde

Auburn is the only powder shade with a pronounced warm red undertone and the recommended choice for natural red hair, dyed auburn, copper blonde, and warm strawberry blonde. With a powder, a matching undertone is extra important because the color diffuses over a broader area than with a pencil.

Brown shades

Medium Brown is the most worn shade for medium to dark brown hair with a warm neutral undertone. Dark Brown is more deeply pigmented for medium to deep brown hair that requires a more intense match without the sharpness of black.

Black hair

Soft Black is a soft black with brown warmth, developed for dark brown to black hair. With a powder, black pigment requires extra measured application, making this variant especially suitable for experienced users.

How to use the PureBrow Brow Powder?

1. First, comb the eyebrows upward and outward with the accompanying spoolie to get an overview of the shape
2. Using the Eye/Brow Brush (sold separately), pick up a small amount of powder by lightly tapping the brush into the pan
3. Tap off excess powder against the edge—especially important for darker shades to prevent fallout
4. Fill in the eyebrow by tapping short strokes to fill bare spots along the natural contour
5. Finally, brush through the eyebrows with the spoolie to blend the powder and set the shape

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this powder and an eyebrow pencil?

A pencil draws individual hairs and works well for existing eyebrows that just need touch-ups. A powder sprays color over the entire area and works better for sparse or irregular eyebrows, where drawing techniques can look too drawn-on. Many users combine both products: pencil for the contour and tail of the eyebrow, powder for the diffuse filling in between.

Why is this powder fully vegan and wheat-free while the colored Brow Gel is not?

The pigment binding in a powder formula requires different additives than those in a gel. For this powder range, Jane Iredale was able to build the complete formula without beeswax or wheat protein, whereas the gel needs these for volume effect and structure. For those who want strictly vegan and wheat-free, this powder range is the recommended choice within the brow line.

Is this powder water-resistant?

Jane Iredale states that the product has not been specifically tested for water resistance but is formulated to adhere to skin and hairs for long-lasting wear. In cases of heavy sweating or contact with water, a fixing gel on top of the powder is recommended for extra durability.

Can I combine this powder with other PureBrow products?

Yes, the PureBrow line is designed as a system. The Precision Pencil defines hair by hair, the Shaping Pencil builds shape and volume, this powder fills diffusely, and the Brow Gel sets. For mature or sparse eyebrows, the pencil plus powder combination is often the most effective approach: pencil in the tail for precision, powder in the middle for soft filling.
