Cosmedix Refine Refinishing Treatment 15ml
Description
Description
Retinol treatment with 4% AGP Complex for smoother skin
Starting a serious retinol routine is not an easy choice. Too weak and results are lacking; too strong and the skin reacts with redness, flaking, and weeks of downtime. Recent vitamin A science has developed a middle ground: chirally correct retinol forms combined with amino acids that are both visibly effective and better tolerated by the skin.
Cosmedix Refine is the entry product of the well-known Refine line, with 4% AGP Retinol Complex including 0.5% pure retinol. The formula is specifically designed for those who want to experience serious retinol effects — not too mild to miss results, not too strong to overload the skin. Amino acids support the skin barrier during exfoliation, allowing even combination or blemish-prone skin to tolerate the treatment well. The ideal preparation for the stronger Refine Plus and Refine RX from the same line.

Active ingredients
4% AGP Retinol Complex (with 0.5% Retinol): An exclusive Cosmedix formulation combining pure retinol with amino acids (Amino-Acid Glycine-PCA, hence AGP). This combination is specifically developed for oily, combination, or blemish-prone skin that requires a stronger retinol effect. By using chirally correct L-forms of the amino acids, the formula is efficient and relatively mild for the concentration level.
Retinyl Acetate: A form of vitamin A that is converted in the skin to retinol and then retinoic acid — the active form. Works complementarily to the direct retinol effect and provides a sustained release of vitamin A in the skin, improving tolerability.
Sodium PCA and Sodium Lactate: Two natural humectants found in the skin as part of the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). Compensate for potential moisture loss caused by retinol and keep the skin supple during active treatment.
L-Hydroxyproline and L-Proline: Two amino acids that form building blocks for collagen — the structural protein that keeps skin firmer and smoother. Support the action of retinol on skin structure by nourishing the natural production of collagen.
Squalane: A biomimetic lipid identical to a natural component of the skin’s sebum. Strengthens the skin barrier and prevents moisture loss — a targeted supplement to retinol’s effect, as retinol can temporarily weaken the barrier.
Sodium Hyaluronate: The salt form of hyaluronic acid that attracts and retains moisture in the skin. Helps maintain hydration during the exfoliation process triggered by retinol.
D-Glucuronolactone: A polyhydroxy acid that gently exfoliates and enhances retinol’s effect. Milder than classic AHAs or BHAs and suitable for sensitive skin.
Galactoarabinan: A polysaccharide from larch tree with clinically studied hydrating and skin-soothing properties. Reduces trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and helps keep the skin supple during treatment.
Hamamelis water (Witch Hazel): A natural astringent toner base that slightly refines pores and helps control excess sebum. Works synergistically with retinol’s pore-refining effect.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Refine, Refine Plus, and Refine RX?
Three steps of the same retinol line with increasing concentration. Refine contains 4% AGP Complex (0.5% retinol) — the entry-level product. Refine Plus contains 8% AGP Complex (1% retinol) — double the potency for those who have consistently used Refine for 60-90 days. Refine RX with 12% AGP Complex (1.5% retinol) is the most concentrated option, suitable for those who have completed the full build-up process. The structured build-up is intentional — starting directly with Refine RX overloads most skin types.
What is the difference between Refine and Serum 16?
Two different retinol technologies for different skin types. Serum 16 uses 16% LG-Retinex (micro-encapsulated retinol+retinal) and is suitable for dry and sensitive skin that poorly tolerates classic retinol. Refine uses the AGP Complex with chirally correct retinol and is formulated for oily, combination, or impure skin that needs exfoliation alongside anti-aging effects. When in doubt: for anti-aging on dry skin choose Serum 16, for impure skin choose Refine.
When will I see the first results from Refine?
The first refresh in skin texture is usually visible after 2 to 4 weeks. For structural improvement of fine lines, pores, and skin tone, daily use for 8 to 12 weeks is needed. The skin may go through a 'purging phase' in the first weeks where underlying impurities come to the surface faster — this is normal and lasts 4 to 6 weeks.
Can I combine Refine with other active ingredients like vitamin C or acids?
Not on the same evening. Do not combine Refine with AHA, BHA, or PHA acids or strong vitamin C formulas in the same routine — that overloads the skin. Classic schedule: Refine in the evening, vitamin C (Simply Brilliant or Pure C Mixing Crystals) and SPF in the morning. Or alternate active evening serums on different days.
Can I use Refine during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. Retinol is not recommended during either period due to possible risks to the child's development. Alternatives are available for care during pregnancy, such as a peptide serum (Affirm or Cell ID), a formula with niacinamide, or a combination with bakuchiol from brands that offer it. Always consult your midwife or skin therapist.
What should I do if my skin flakes or becomes irritated?
Light flaking and mild redness are normal in the first weeks — a sign that the skin is getting used to retinol. In that case, reduce the frequency to once every three nights and use a rich moisturizing cream or add C.P.R. Skin Recovery Serum as a soothing layer. If irritation persists after three weeks, pause for a week and restart with a gentler buildup.
How long does a 15ml bottle last?
When used according to the schedule (starting every three nights, gradually building up to every evening), a 15ml bottle lasts about two to three months. For most users, this is more than enough to assess the effect and possibly switch to Refine Plus after 60-90 days.
