Description
Retinol serum with LG-Retinex for anti-aging without irritation
Retinol has been known for decades as the golden ingredient against signs of aging — no other cosmetic ingredient is as thoroughly scientifically supported for reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation spots. The downside is well known: redness, flaking, sensitivity, and a buildup period that takes months. For dry or sensitive skin, classic retinol is often simply too harsh, making the benefits unreachable.
Cosmedix Serum 16 solves this problem with 16% LG-Retinex, a proprietary micro-encapsulated combination of retinol and retinal. The lipid encapsulation ensures the ingredient is released in a controlled way in the skin, drastically reducing the typical irritation of retinol without compromising its effectiveness. At the same time, the serum delivers hydration through squalane, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and glycosaminoglycans — a combination that provides retinol results even for dry and sensitive skin without downtime.
Benefits
- Reduces the visibility of fine lines and deeper wrinkles
- Evens out pigmentation spots and uneven skin tone
- Suitable for dry and sensitive skin thanks to controlled release
- Hydrates during the retinol effect through hyaluronic acid and squalane
- Almost no redness or flaking — anti-aging without downtime
Active ingredients
16% LG-Retinex complex: A patent-pending technology from Cosmedix where retinol and retinal are encapsulated together in a lipid matrix. The micro-encapsulation has three effects: higher stability of the retinoid (no loss due to air exposure), improved penetration into the target layer of the skin, and controlled release that reduces the typical irritation of retinol. Retinal is also an intermediate step that converts faster into the active form retinoic acid than retinol.
Sodium hyaluronate: A form of hyaluronic acid that retains moisture in the skin and supports the retinol effect. When using retinol, the skin can temporarily lose more moisture — sodium hyaluronate compensates for this and keeps the skin supple during the buildup period.
Squalane: A biomimetic lipid identical to a natural component of sebum. Strengthens the skin barrier and prevents moisture loss — especially valuable alongside retinol, which can temporarily weaken the barrier.
Vitamin E (Tocopherol): A powerful antioxidant that supports the stability of retinol in the formula and protects the skin against free radicals. Also reduces the visibility of discolorations.
Glycosaminoglycans: Natural molecular groups found in the skin known for their hydrating and restorative effects. Help keep the skin supple during the cell renewal cycle stimulated by retinol.
L-proline: An amino acid that plays a role in the skin’s collagen structure. Supports the effect of retinol on skin firmness and contributes to a smoother texture.
Sandalwood and lavender oil: Botanical ingredients that both soothe and contribute to a pleasant ritual. Sandalwood has a traditional use in skincare for calming irritated skin.
Witch hazel water and honeysuckle: Two gentle, soothing ingredients that support the skin barrier and help reduce skin sensitivity during retinol use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Serum 16 and Cosmedix Define?
Define is a lighter retinol treatment, suitable for those new to retinol or looking for maintenance. Serum 16 is highly concentrated (16% LG-Retinex) and aimed at visible results for mature skin or skin with clear signs of aging. Those just starting with retinol are better off starting with Define and possibly building up to Serum 16 later.
When will I see the first results from Serum 16?
Retinol works on the natural cell renewal cycle, which lasts about 28 days. The first improvement in skin texture and radiance is usually visible after 4 to 6 weeks. For structural improvement of fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation spots, daily use for 8 to 12 weeks is needed. Consistency is crucial with retinol.
Why use only in the evening?
Retinol breaks down under UV radiation, which negates its effect. Additionally, retinol temporarily makes the skin more sensitive to the sun, increasing the risk of pigmentation and sun damage when used in the morning. In the evening, the skin also has the night to optimally recover and start the cell renewal cycle. Daily SPF the next day is non-negotiable.
Can I use Serum 16 during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. Retinol and retinal are not recommended during either period due to possible risks to the child's development. For anti-aging during pregnancy and breastfeeding, alternatives like a peptide serum (Affirm or Cell ID) or a combination of niacinamide and vitamin C are safe choices.
What should I do if my skin flakes or becomes irritated?
Light flaking and mild redness are normal in the first weeks — a sign that the skin is getting used to retinol. In that case, reduce the frequency to once every three nights and use a rich moisturizing cream. If irritation persists after three weeks, pause for a week and restart with a gentler buildup. In case of severe redness, burning, or pain, always stop and consult your skin therapist.
Can I combine Serum 16 with other active ingredients like acids or vitamin C?
Not on the same evening. Do not combine Serum 16 with AHA, BHA, or PHA acids or strong vitamin C formulas in the same routine — that overloads the skin. Classic schedule: Serum 16 in the evening, vitamin C and SPF in the morning. Or alternate active evening serums on different days of the week.
