Description
Mineral sunscreen SPF30 with zinc oxide for sensitive skin
Many people are put off by mineral sunscreens that feel heavy or leave a white cast when it comes to physical UV protection. However, a mineral filter is actually the most skin-friendly choice, especially for sensitivity, redness, or reactive skin. The difference lies entirely in the formulation: a well-chosen non-nano zinc oxide can feel invisible and light on all skin tones.
Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defense SPF30 was developed precisely for this reason. The formula combines non-nano zinc oxide with a bio-active mushroom complex and green tea for broad protection against UVA, UVB, and blue light. The texture absorbs lightly, leaves no white film, and soothes the skin during daily exposure to sun and environmental factors.
Benefits
- Protects against UVA, UVB, and blue light using only non-nano zinc oxide
- Absorbs invisibly on all skin tones without white cast or heavy film
- Soothes redness and irritation caused by UV and environmental stress
- Strengthens antioxidant defense against free radicals and pollution
- Suitable for sensitive skin and daily use under makeup
Active ingredients
Non-nano zinc oxide (20.9%): The main player in this formula and one of the most skin-friendly UV filters available. Zinc oxide acts as a physical shield that reflects and scatters sunlight, rather than absorbing it like chemical filters do. The high concentration of 20.9% provides robust broad-spectrum protection against both UVA radiation, which causes skin aging and pigmentation, and UVB radiation, which causes sunburn. The non-nano size means the zinc particles are too large to penetrate the skin, so the ingredient works on the skin surface without systemic absorption. This makes zinc oxide especially suitable for sensitive skin, rosacea-prone skin, pregnant women, and children.
Cordyceps Sinensis & Poria Cocos extract: This bio-active mushroom complex is one of the most interesting ingredients in this formula. Cordyceps Sinensis has been known in traditional Eastern medicine for centuries for its anti-inflammatory properties and helps reduce UV-induced redness and dryness. Poria Cocos works synergistically to calm irritated skin, support self-repair, and help maintain the skin barrier during sun exposure. Together they form a biologically active layer on top of the physical protection.
Camellia Sinensis (green tea) extract: One of the most powerful antioxidants from the plant world, rich in polyphenols such as EGCG. UV radiation and environmental pollution cause free radicals in the skin that break down collagen and accelerate skin aging. Green tea neutralizes these free radicals at the cellular level, forming a second protective layer alongside the mineral UV filter. The ingredient also has soothing properties that reduce redness.
Sodium Hyaluronate: The salt form of hyaluronic acid with a smaller molecular weight, allowing better penetration into the upper skin layers. It binds moisture in the skin and prevents moisture loss that often occurs with sun exposure. This keeps the skin supple and hydrated even during prolonged sun exposure.
Bisabolol: A natural active ingredient from chamomile with strong soothing and anti-inflammatory effects. It reduces redness, supports the skin barrier, and soothes reactive skin. Combined with zinc oxide, it forms an ideal duo for people who are prone to irritation.
Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil (argan oil): Rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, and plant sterols. Argan oil deeply nourishes the skin, supports the lipid barrier, and keeps the formula smooth without leaving a greasy or heavy feeling. This ingredient ensures the SPF feels pleasant to wear, even on dry skin.

Frequently asked questions
Does this sunscreen leave a white cast on dark skin?
No. Although zinc oxide is naturally white, this formula is specifically developed to absorb invisibly on all skin tones. The particles are treated so they do not leave a white film, even on deeper or warmer skin tones. We do recommend building up a thin layer and rubbing it in well for the best result.
What is the difference between a mineral and chemical sunscreen?
A mineral sunscreen like this uses zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sits on the skin and reflects UV radiation. A chemical sunscreen contains filters like avobenzone or octocrylene, which absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat. Mineral filters work immediately upon application, are more stable in the sun, and are generally better tolerated by sensitive skin, rosacea, and reactive skin types.
Can I wear this product under makeup?
Yes. The light, silky texture forms a smooth base under foundation or tinted moisturizer. Wait about a minute after application before using other products so the formula can set. This prevents pilling or makeup separating.
Is this product suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Non-nano zinc oxide is one of the few UV filters generally recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding because it is not absorbed through the skin. This formula also contains no ingredients like retinol or high doses of salicylic acid that are avoided during this period. When in doubt, we always recommend consulting briefly with your midwife or doctor.
How often should I reapply sunscreen?
For optimal protection, reapply every two hours during direct sun exposure, and always after sweating, swimming, or drying off. For daily indoor use or in urban environments, one good layer in the morning is sufficient, possibly supplemented after lunch if you have been outside a lot.
Is SPF30 enough or do I need SPF50?
SPF30 blocks about 97% of UVB radiation, SPF50 blocks about 98%. For daily use in Northern Europe, SPF30 is sufficient in most cases, provided you apply generously and reapply regularly. For intense sun exposure, at high altitudes, in the tropics, or for hyperpigmentation skin care, SPF50 may be a better choice.
