Description
Mineral powder foundation SPF 15 for very dark cool skin
Cocoa is one of the deepest shades in the PurePressed Base range and carries its name intentionally — the color of pure cocoa powder, with unmistakable depth and a restrained cool undertone. For very dark skin with cool undertones, this is a hard-to-find combination in mainstream foundations. Many formulas in the deep segment automatically lean warm-reddish, causing a cool-dark skin type to end up either too warm or too gray.
Jane Iredale Cocoa solves this by a carefully chosen lower concentration of mineral filters (TiO2 3%, ZnO 0.6%), providing SPF 15. This choice is essential — higher percentages would cause a noticeable gray cast on very dark skin. The mineral powder foundation offers light to full coverage, also functions as a concealer, and preserves the vibrant natural depth of the skin with a semi-matte finish.
Color: Cocoa is a deep dark shade with cool undertones, ideal for the deepest segment of the color spectrum with a calm, non-warm appearance.
Benefits
- Serves the deepest cool-dark segment often missing in standard ranges
- Maintains the natural cool depth of the skin without warm or gray disruption
- Lower mineral filter content prevents visible flashback in flash photography
- Evens out hyperpigmentation without losing skin texture
- Vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free produced
Active ingredients
Titanium dioxide & zinc oxide (in lower concentration): Jane Iredale Cocoa deliberately uses 3% titanium dioxide and 0.6% zinc oxide. This lower dosage provides SPF 15 but prevents the white mineral powders from leaving a visible gray cast on very dark skin. For extended UV protection during prolonged outdoor exposure, we recommend applying a separate SPF 30 or higher under the foundation.
Pomegranate extract: An antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals caused by UV radiation and environmental factors. Helps maintain the skin's natural depth over the long term by limiting oxidative aging.
Pine cone extract (Pinus Strobus): Promotes an even skin tone and helps visually soften post-inflammatory pigment spots. For dark skin that is genetically more sensitive to PIH after pimples or irritation, this ingredient provides long-term structural support.
Plankton and algae extract: Marine minerals that nourish the skin barrier and have a calming effect. A valuable addition for skin that produces more sebum or may be sensitive to seasonal changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Cocoa and Bittersweet?
Both fall into the SPF 15 group, but Jane Iredale Cocoa is clearly deeper and cooler than Bittersweet. Bittersweet has a warm chocolate-brown-red bias, while Cocoa radiates calm and cool depth without warm discoloration.
Why is the SPF of Cocoa lower than that of the lighter shades?
On very deep dark skin, a high concentration of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide is visually unacceptable — it creates a gray veil that distorts the natural skin color. Jane Iredale has therefore deliberately chosen SPF 15 instead of SPF 20 for the deepest shades, preserving the natural skin tone.
Is Cocoa suitable for the deepest skin tones?
Cocoa is the deepest shade in the PurePressed Base range. For very deep dark skin, this is the recommended choice; if in doubt between Cocoa and Bittersweet, choose Cocoa when your skin clearly falls within the deepest dark-cool spectrum.
How do I combine Cocoa with the Jane Iredale skincare line?
For optimal results, we recommend a hydrating routine beforehand: Jane Iredale BeautyPrep Cleanser, followed by Hyaluronic Serum and Face Moisturizer. Then a separate SPF 30+ for extended UV protection, and finally Cocoa as a full-coverage finish. Finish with a hydration spray for a velvety finish.
